Summer. The time we engage the other three R's - Rest, Relaxation, and Renovations. Whether taking on a big reno, making a few aesthetic changes, or (finally!) addressing that lingering pesky repair project, we know that many people engage in some type of "home work" this season.
Having recently sold a beautifully designed home - featured in the Globe & Mail - we use today's blog to highlight the creative ways Parisian Designer, Vanessa Emam, transformed this typical brick North Toronto house into a spectacular and inviting living space. While we cannot all be professional designers, we think this story of transformation is rich with simple ideas that have powerful outcomes.
In the spirit of summer, let's begin outdoors. In Emam's case, she incorporated multiple design elements to create a backyard oasis for all ages. The key take-away - create a space in which the entire family can play, relax and eat. For play, Emam fit a trampoline in the backyard and a basketball hoop at the driveway's end. To relax, she created two distinct seating areas which allow suit a range of needs, from quiet reading or vibrant conversation with friends and family. Also, a calming water feature adds a welcome effect.
Inside, Emam used bright primary colours mixed with touches of wood and concrete. As shown in the beautiful photos below, a single line of yellow or a carefully placed bright red or blue wall adds incredible vibrancy to an otherwise "typical" space.
Thankfully, one need not be a professionally-trained designer to learn a few tricks from this inspiring example. Thinking outside the box in terms of using space - such as transforming a garage into a covered seating area - can be a creatively genius move. Moreover, carefully chosen accent colours, the introduction of sleek materials, and a few key design pieces can take any space - big or small - to another level.
If you are engaging in a summer design project, we wish you all the best!
